Psychological Struggles of Refugee Women

Updated: Oct 14, 2020

Hello there! I'm Tejaswini Ashok, Director of Technology and Platforms for HerTime, and in this post, I wanted to discuss the psychological struggles of refugee women- specifically resettled refugee women. In our previous post, we mentioned how refugee women suffer from a lack of confidence and motivation. But why?

The poor mental health of these refugees mainly originates from the traumatic experiences they undergo during their lives. One study done by researchers who work for the Canadian Collaboration for Immigrant and Refugee Health mentions that the trauma is directly associated with severe exposure of violence. Constant exposure to violence can cause "higher rates of trauma-related disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorders and chronic pain" along with other somatic syndromes.

Many refugees have gone through several assessments and treatments and reports do show that the risks of developing such mental health issues come from the "pre-migration exposures, stresses and uncertainty during migration, and post-migration resettlement experiences" that come from learning adaptation techniques."

To all you readers: we want to increase awareness on this topic. Take some time out of your day to spread awareness.
